History of Wallagrass
Before taking its place as an organized plantation, our land was first surveyed and designated simply as Township 17, Seventh Range West of the Easterly Line of the State, or T17 R7 WELS. Community governance began to take shape in 1840, when the settlement was organized for election purposes as part of Hancock Plantation alongside the township that would become New Canada. A decade later, in 1850, the area stepped out on its own, reorganizing from Hancock Plantation into Walagrass Plantation. Through subsequent legislative reorganizations in the 1860s and 1870s, our status and the updated spelling as Wallagrass Plantation were officially confirmed.
The community continued to grow, and in 1979, Wallagrass was officially incorporated as a town. Following that 1970s incorporation, the town fell under the initial jurisdiction of Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission, until Wallagrass assumed local planning control in 1988.
