History of Reed Plantation

The history of Reed began in 1830 when John Clifford arrived as the first settler of the area. On June 6, 1843, the community was organized as a plantation from Township 1, Range 3 WELS, and it was subsequently reorganized in 1853, 1860, 1876, and 1896. Postal service grew during this time, starting with the establishment of the Wytopitlock post office in Reed Plantation on February 23, 1874, followed by a post office operating under the name Reed Plantation from June 24, 1878, until November 15, 1906.

By 1886, Reed had a train station served by the European and North American Railroad. The community's borders also shifted over the years; on March 5, 1889, Aroostook County gained territory when Reed Plantation annexed land set off from Drew Plantation. That annexation was later repealed on March 28, 1903, when land was set off from Reed Plantation back to Drew Plantation.
