History of Island Falls
In the early 1840s, Levi Sewall, Nehemiah Alexander, and Jesse Craig explored the area and settled Island Falls, with Sewall erecting the community's first home. The settlement grew, and by 1859, the first public schoolhouse was constructed, serving initially as a church and meetinghouse as well. Previously organized as Island Falls Plantation, Island Falls was officially incorporated as a town on February 27, 1872.
A few years later, in September 1878, Theodore Roosevelt first visited Island Falls. He hired local resident William Wingate 'Bill' Sewall as his wilderness guide, forming a lifelong friendship, and spent time during his visits at a spot where he read his Bible while camping. In 1970, that site, known as Bible Point, was added to the State Register of Historic Places, and the 27.4-acre parcel was donated to Maine in December 1971 to become the Bible Point State Historic Site.
