Downhill Skiing

Uncrowded Slopes at Big Rock and Lonesome Pine

Downhill skiing in Aroostook County is anchored by community-led slopes that have welcomed alpine skiers for generations. From the western face of Mars Hill to the local hills of Fort Kent and Presque Isle, skiers find groomed trails, racing heritage, and deep local roots. These nonprofit hills keep winter alpine traditions active across northern Maine.

Alpine skiers heading to Mars Hill reach Big Rock Mountain from its trailhead facility at 37 Graves Road. Operating on the mountain's western face, it provides downhill skiing on 26 trails across nearly 1,000 feet of continuous vertical drop, including paths like Elbow, Family Trail, and Chair Trail. Downhill skiing on Mars Hill carries a long lineage tracing back to late February 1937, when Harold Townsend completed the first recorded race down an icy trail. Today, the mountain is managed by a community-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that grooms trails, hosts lessons, and conducts youth ski programs such as Rockers and Ski4Life. That long-standing Ski4Life initiative supplies subsidized equipment, lessons, and lift access for thousands of local school children and tribal youth across Northern Maine, while the mountain also hosts an annual WinterKids Family Day with half-price lift tickets, games, and raffles. The slopes remain active with competitive alpine racing, from high school giant slalom races at the Big Rock Invitational to events held by the Big Rock Youth Racing Program, including its annual BigRock Youth Ski Race.

Further north, downhill skiing in Aroostook County continues at Lonesome Pine Trails, accessed right from Forest Avenue in Fort Kent. This community facility is managed by a nonprofit organization that maintains slopes, grooms trails, and offers junior alpine race programs across 12 trails ranging from beginner to expert terrain. Skiers can stay out past dusk on three illuminated trails designated for night skiing. Lonesome Pine Trails regularly hosts alpine ski racing traditions, such as annual invitational races, high school county and state alpine championships, and Maine Principals' Association Class B Alpine State Meet races. Local racers are represented on the slopes by the Fort Kent Valley Racing Team, an amateur club affiliated with the Maine Alpine Racing Association. Inside the lodges at both Lonesome Pine Trails and BigRock Mountain, local bands regularly play live music during the winter ski season, creating a festive environment after a day on the slopes.

In Presque Isle, Quoggy Jo Ski Center welcomes skiers at 426 Fort Fairfield Road. Traditions here trace back to 1932, when the Quoggy Joe Ski Club began organized skiing in the area, leading to the operation of one of the earliest cable sled tows by 1940. Today, Quoggy Jo is operated by volunteers through a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that manages the alpine layout and runs youth downhill skiing programs. Its terrain is served by a T-bar lift that takes skiers up to three open downhill slopes and four wooded trails.
