The route

Leaving the Shiretown of Houlton, the journey heads north along US 1 through the farming communities of Littleton and Monticello. As the road rolls forward, mixed stands of maple, birch, and evergreen give way to sprawling potato and grain fields. In the fall, farm equipment moves across the land gathering the harvest, and the roadside timber shows warm patches of amber and red, though foliage color and conditions vary from year to year.

Continuing northward, the highway skirts past Bridgewater and approaches Mars Hill, where the distinctive outline of Mars Hill Mountain rises prominently over the valley floor. Near the center of Mars Hill, the route to Fort Fairfield transitions onto US 1A, branching toward the northeast while main US 1 continues toward Presque Isle. The landscape here opens up even wider, with long sightlines extending across tilled farmland, hedgerows, and distant low ridges in neighboring New Brunswick.

Following US 1A past the fields of Easton, the road dips and crests along open plateaus before winding toward the Aroostook River basin. Golden grasslands, dark spruce borders, and tidy farmsteads line the way into the historic agricultural hub of Fort Fairfield, where the river valley settles beneath vibrant autumn hills.
